Born in 1976 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Fringe was educated outside of an urban setting in the Natal Midlands. Thereafter, from 1995 to 1998 he studied graphic design towards advanced diplomas in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In subsequent agency work, he experienced the fast-evolving, stratified South African marketplace and the uneven use of visual codes. To sustain himself he consulted for corporate clients.
Fringe is the pseudonym of South Africa’s most successful pop artist. He derives his name from his maverick status outside of the mainstream art scene. Yet in his trajectory, he has gained a devoted following among a broad base of art lovers including serious collectors.
Fringe’s story is a combination of high output and well-timed solo exhibitions that have launched his signature series’, as well as a singular style that has become identifiable as artist’s alone.
Fringe’s works are now found in private collections in South Africa and abroad. Increased demand for his work has created a market, which has, in turn, lead to an increase in value. The growing demand for pop-inspired artworks in South Africa, that incorporate iconography based on global popular culture, is being met by Fringe at his representative Daville Baillie Gallery.
