Being a Gallerist…
Updated: Jul 20, 2019
Many visitors to the gallery ask what we do all day if it seems quiet. The misconception that gallerists wait for customers to walk in always make us smile. If only it were that simple. So we thought why not give an insight into working here.
As a small independent gallery, Lu and I wear many hats. Social media, facilities, maintenance, logistics, curators, art-sourcers, artist managers, client relations, sales, legal, finance, cleaners, wall-painters, window display designers, teamakers, coffee-grinders, croissant-munchers…and, more often than you’d believe, we are advice-givers, sanctuary-providers, financial advisors or even amateur psychiatrists.
Aside from what goes on the gallery walls, we work with interior designers, corporate clients and source artwork on loan for large brands’ for their marketing campaigns, photoshoots and home staging; we also shot a music video in the gallery for Che Lingo, a south London rapper and up-and-coming star of the London music scene. We have an ongoing collaboration with a Dubai-based gallery, ArtLondonDubai, who sell to the Middle East market, we also recently collaborated on an art event in the new Crossrail hub in Canary Wharf. Not only are these a great way to get our artists’ out to a wider audience, in the age of struggling retailers, we are constantly looking for new strategies to get the 508 brand out there.
This summer we have judged our Open Call competition, on a quest to find an emerging talent in the art world. The prize is a year’s representation by 508 Gallery, a chance to exhibit with us both here in the gallery, on our website and at various art fairs. We love giving emerging artists opportunities to gain followers, buyers, fans.
We are also curating several upcoming exhibitions, doing PR and marketing for September before the summer slowdown plus heading out to artist-run fairs on the hunt for more incredible talent. Current remit for me: Find a Sculptor!
There is never a dull moment, but what we love most and always make time for is our wonderful group of regular clients popping in for coffee and a chat!
It gives us an excuse to crack open the biscuits.
