  • "I SEE INTERESTING FACES ALL THE TIME, PEOPLE READING, WAITING , SOCIALISING AND OCCASIONALLY I ASK AN INTERESTING FACE IF I CAN TAKE THEIR PICTURE. THIS USUALLY RESULTS IN A BIG CHEESY GRIN, SELF AWARE PHOTO THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I WANT."

  • DONNA POINGDESTRE

Winniemmay(Donna Poingdestre) is known for painting strong images of women and submissive and androgynous men using a unique combination of traditional painting techniques and spray cans on a vintage pianola paper background. She is currently studying for her masters in fine art at Central St Martins.

The punched note holes in the pianola paper create a negative space which both represent the fact that we can never truly capture or know a person and gives the pieces another dimension through which the subject can be seen.

Working on both large and small scale, Winniemmay makes marks and motifs to explore a passing moment, a fleeting expression or a hidden message. When translating this to walls or canvas, she recreates the pianola motif with stencils overlaying the pieces as this is a fundamental element of the work.

Winniemmay studied at Portsmouth College of art and design and went on to graduate from Portsmouth University in 1994 with a BA Hons in media and 3D design and during this time spent a period of time set painting at The Royal Opera House which informs and influences her large scale wall art techniques.

She spent many years as a youth, social and substance misuse worker while retaining a continued interest in the arts and her own artistic development. With a growing profile, Winniemmay became a full-time artist in 2017, is a founding member of the Fire Artists collective, exhibited in solo and collaborative gallery exhibitions, delivered community art projects and private commissions, painted at street art festivals and secured two artists in residencies, nationally and internationally.
